One of my best friends recently bought the He-Man season 1 DVD. If you don’t know who or what He-Man is, that is because he was way before your time. He-Man is a cartoon character from ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.’ This was one of those after school cartoons I used to watch during the early 80’s. So there we were, on the phone, reminiscing, quizzing each other, and making fun of things we remembered from the cartoon. The best part of talking about the shows you used to watch as a kid is talking about all the stuff that didn’t make sense. They’re not just things you realized as you got older, but also things you sort of thought about at the time but didn’t really say anything either because you didn’t care or accepted it as part of the magic of the whole thing. When it comes to He-Man, I could never understand how no one could figure out who He-Man was.
Superman had a disguise. Clark had a pair of glasses, it wasn’t much, but he had something that changed the way he looked. Bruce Wayne goes all out with a suite and a mask that covered half his face. Peter Parker had the whole secret identity down right, he covers up his entire body, he ain’t taking any chances; when Spiderman suits up, no skin is exposed. But He-Man…that guy still looks the same! Prince Adam (He-Man’s real identity) looks exactly like He-Man. No glasses, no mask, not even a mustache. All Prince Adam does is take off his clothes and he turns into He-Man. So the award for the Dumbest Villain of All Time goes to: Skeletor. You’ve got to be the dumbest mother fucker to not figure that one out.

All right, okay, I know, He-Man’s skin and hair color does change slightly but it’s hardly noticeable and not enough of a difference for anyone to not see that it’s the same dude — with a slight tan.
Skeletor actually wasn’t the only one that couldn’t tell. He-man’s own family and friends couldn’t even tell. And that’s another thing, when Prince Adam changes into He-Man, he has to go hide somewhere and yell out those magical words that transform him into his alter ego (“By the power of gray skull…blah blah blah I am He-Man”). So why the hell is it that no one ever hears him? When it’s happening, there are all kinds of lightning, thunder and wind, and no one ever hears it??!?!?! I remember an episode where Prince Adam goes into the next room and changes into He-Man, but no one heard anything. I mean, it’s not like he covered his mouth and whispered “by the power of…” He’s yelling at the top of his lungs, with thunder, lightning, wind, and no one in the next room noticed anything out of the ordinary! There wasn’t even a door separating the rooms!!! Shit, when the hardwood floor creeks in the next room at my house, I’m hearing it!

Don’t tell me nobody heard that!
***** UPDATE *****
Wow, they actually met!!!
I don’t know how I stumbled upon this image, but lets hope Superman figured it out and gave He-Man some pointers on the art of disguise.
